Dark Nature commences with a gripping and realistic horror scene that sets the tone for the rest of the film. Joy is in the kitchen preparing dinner when Derek arrives home, visibly enraged. Joy manages to escape his anger, but their family dog suffers a tragic fate. Six months later, Joy, still struggling with the trauma, reluctantly joins Carmen on a camping trip combined with therapy sessions led by Dr. Dunnely and attended by other women. As the trip progresses, the women begin experiencing flashbacks and haunting visions connected to their past traumas. Joy grows increasingly skeptical of Dr. Dunnely’s methods and becomes convinced that Derek is stalking them. The discovery of predator-related evidence heightens the tension within the group. The breathtaking Canadian Rockies, beautifully captured by cinematographer Jaryl Lim, serve as both a picturesque setting and a looming threat. The film’s sound crew expertly creates an atmosphere of menace, utilizing eerie forest sounds, whispered voices, and the distinct click of Derek’s Zippo lighter. The creature itself, skillfully brought to life by Kyra Macpherson and portrayed by Luke Moore, presents a uniquely unsettling appearance. While character development could have been more robust, Dark Nature successfully weaves themes of abuse, PTSD, and guilt into a traditional creature-in-the-woods narrative, offering a thought-provoking and unpretentious viewing experience.
