The movie is definitely hard to watch because it shows its hard topic in great detail and puts its characters through the ringer. Even though it has a dark tone, what I liked most about it was how kind and hopeful it was. Both Aronofsky and Hunter, who adapted his play, used a minimalist approach to make sure that the movie stays true to the intimacy of the stage show.
The focus is on the actors, all of whom do the best work of their careers. Liz, Charlie’s best friend and caretaker, is played by Chau in a way that is both tough and moving. Sink’s popularity has grown over the past year thanks to her roles in Stranger Things and Taylor Swift’s All Too Well. She is one of the best actresses of her generation, and the way she plays Ellie is out of this world. She gives a powerful and complicated performance that is one of the film’s best parts. The most impressive thing about The Whale, though, is Fraser’s great comeback performance in what might be one of the hardest roles we’ve ever seen. Fraser physically becomes Charlie and plays him with so much humanity that it’s hard not to care about this character. It is a show-stopping performance that most people have never seen before.
